VOCAL GIRLS PRIDE

Happy Friday! Here’s a pride playlist celebrating some of our favourite LGBTQ+ artists.

LGBTQ+ people have always made the most exciting music, spanning from grassroots punk scenes to glittering dance halls. This June marks Pride month, a time to recognise how far we’ve come and where we’re going.

Pride can mean so much to so many people; its origins in protest still exist but it has also spilled out into culture. The pride parade in my hometown always rains, and only the truly committed make it through the day. Despite how unglamorous it is, those days give me a sense of belonging like nothing else. Whether it’s the euphoria of dancing the night away in a gay bar, or enjoying a quiet sense of solidarity and safety, pride is for everyone.

My sense of queer belonging started with The Spook School, who open the playlist, a band at the helm of the queer punk scene when I was a teenager. Hearing music about queerness, especially expressed with such sincerity, allowed me to picture a future for myself.

There’s never been a better time for LGBTQ+ music. Young queer people of today get to see Lil Nas X topping the charts, creating his own image and making, frankly, the best music - I rejoice in it! I hope the visibility of artists like Lil Nas X will give new generations the confidence to be themselves, just like The Spook School gave me.

This Pride month VOCAL GIRLS want to celebrate queer music in all of its expansive glory, and this playlist is a great place to start!
