QUICK FIRE QUESTIONS AT THE GREAT ESCAPE

In between sets over The Great Escape weekend we managed to catch some of the most exciting acts on the bill for a brief chat about themselves and their plans for the weekend. We sat down with the lovely Medicine Cabinet, Human Interest, Witch Fever and Pixey.

MEDICINE CABINET

Can you introduce yourself and what you do?

Anna: So, my name is Anna Acquroff, I am the front woman of Medicine Cabinet.

Eilidh: and I’m Eilidh, I do synth and guitar.

Could you tell us three words that are non-genre related that describe your music?

E: Good *laughing*

A: Yeah! Good, good and good. I think fantasy?

E: Genre isn’t real, is there a word for that?

A: That’s it.

What song of yours would you recommend to someone that hadn’t listened to you before?

A: I would recommend ‘The Signs’, which is our first single. It came out [on May 11th] at midnight, which is so exciting.

E: Finally! We wrote it before lockdown, it was a long time ago.

A: You know, we’ve been an entire live band for three years, but despite that we’re very studio orientated and we’ve written a lot of demos and stuff. [The Signs] is our absolute favourite.

E: It makes perfect sense as the first [single] it introduces a lot of different parts that will come out.

A: And the feeling of the song! Especially at the beginning, the first lines are “as I rise up from the platform, and I try to catch your eye”.

E: We've always visualised like a big smoke machine and a glam rock sort of moment.

A: It feels like a sort of-

E: -“here we are!”

What are you doing over The Great Escape weekend?

A: We are playing Chalk, which is just next door, Then tomorrow we’re playing One Church. We’re gonna see our friend’s band VLURE, we’re gonna see our friend’s band Cassyette-

E: Adora?

A: -Adora! we’re gonna see Audiobooks — big fans of audiobooks — and just have a lovely time and meet lovely people, swim in the sea at some point.

E: Definitely, it’s happening.

Which set are you most excited for this weekend?

E: There's so many, literally all of them.

A: We made a Spotify playlist of bands we’re excited to see […] Rebecca Black!

E: Oh yeah! That’s who we’re excited to see, did you see the promo video with the massive tits? It was amazing, big fake ones.

A: Not to be a total nerd, but I’ve just finished my degree in Sociology and Psychology of Music - specialising in music and gender - and one of the books that I used to finish my dissertation wrote quite a lot about Rebecca Black and ‘Friday’. […] It’s really interesting to look at the vitriol she experienced because of how it represented a certain type of femininity in music and pop music.

E: She was so young as well, I just remember every single meme was about “Rebecca Black is ruining music”, she was just a kid!

HUMAN INTEREST

Can you introduce yourself and what you do?

Tyler: My name is Tyler. I play bass and sing.

Harry: My name is Cat or Harry, I play guitar and sing.

Could you tell us three words that are non-genre related that describe your music?

T: Vibey, sexy.

H: Weird.

T: Weird.

What song of yours would you recommend to someone that hadn’t listened to you before

Both: Spiced Apple

What are you doing over The Great Escape weekend?

T: I really want to check out Bob Vylan, they're sick, also Rebecca Black is playing and it’s Friday so-

H: -On Friday what the fuck

*laughing*

T: We might go to that.

H: We’re gonna see Warmduscher as well, and we saw The Lazy Eyes last night-

T: -Basically just gonna enjoy being in Brighton, have a fun weekend.

What set are you most excited for this weekend?

T: It actually would’ve been The Lazy Eyes which was yesterday.

H: I’m really excited for Warmduscher personally, [they’re] so cool.

T: And Human Interest’s set, obviously!

WITCH FEVER

Can you introduce yourself and what you do?

A: My name's Amy and I’m the vocalist for Witch Fever.

Could you tell us three words that are non-genre related that describe your music?

A: Oh! Right. Angry, fun, and I wanna say gay.

What song of yours would you recommend to someone that hadn’t listened to you before

A: Reincarnate

Although you’re only here for the day, what are you doing over your time at The Great Escape?

A: We got here at 5pm, did a sound check, we played, then we’re gonna hang out tonight but I don’t drink, so I’m gonna run away when everyone gets really drunk. Back to the hotel for an early night, have a bath and read. We might see Grove and I wanted to see Scalping, but we couldn’t because of the clashes.

What set are you most excited for this weekend?

A: My own *laughing* Yeah, we're gonna try and go see Grove so that will be fun.

PIXEY

Can you introduce yourself and what you do?

P: I’m Pixey, and I’m a musician, producer and songwriter from Liverpool.

Could you tell us three words that are non-genre related that describe your music?

P: Sunshine, happy, with a hint of like…pessimism.

What song of yours would you recommend to someone that hadn’t listened to you before

P: Probably Sunshine State.

What are you doing for The Great Escape?

P: I am headlining the Chess Club stage at Coalition, it’s gonna be good.

Are you planning on catching any sets today?

P: Yes I am actually, probably most of the Chess Club roster *laughing* I’ve got to stick with my own! I’m really excited to watch Phoebe Green actually, it’ll be great.

You can get tickets for our June event with Pixey at The Windmill Brixton here.

Amber Lashley

Hello hello, my name is Amber and I’m currently an English student at UCL in London. I’m getting involved with VGC because I’m very much obsessed with music and live music, and I want to celebrate and support some amazing artists in any way I can. I’ve previously picked up writing work as a freelance music journalist and also worked at the independent music venue The Boileroom, which has helped me feel a lot closer to the industry. I’m constantly looking for / going to live shows, searching for new music, or listening to a range of old favourites, at the moment I’m especially stuck on Happyness and Katy J Pearson.
