PINS: ‘HOT SLICK’ ALBUM REVIEW

PINS’ new release ‘Hot Slick’, is fierce, powerful, and an unequivocal statement of girl power. The Manchester girls have clearly been building towards this breakthrough, which has been a long time coming, but the net result is a sound bursting with neon synths and thunderous guitars.

The bold chant-like lyrics and satisfying harmonies, particularly in fiery song ‘Ghosting’, are both infatuating and addictive. The strong beats throughout, make this album what it is: a vigorous and sparkling anthem. It sets itself firmly far away from any indie genre, and instead, solely strives towards the punk-electronica rock scene. This 2020 release is one we all knew these girls were capable of, right from the days of their 2015 single ‘Too Little Too Late’; they aren’t holding back one bit.

Luminous neon covers for the album, and the previously dropped singles, perfectly reflect the sound of the songs themselves. But PINS select bright orange, rather than pink, further representing this album as the antithesis of traditional old-style female values.

Anyone who’s a keen listener of The Orielles, Flat Worms and The Lovely Eggs should absolutely not miss out on the incandescent new 2020 songs that PINS have dropped on us so casually, yet so powerfully. Accusatory point-blank lyrics “Yes I will be out tonight / I whip my ponytail / from side to side” give the tone of zealous freedom. The girls gift us with an all-encompassing wave of sassy, stylish and sexy.

Released through their own label Haus of Pins, this album gives the same amount of bursting energy as their live performances. The message of independence, self-love and positivity is something all teen girls could do with, especially to break free from the cycle of mind-numbing love songs. Exemplified specifically in ‘Read my Lips’, we can see these girls are refusing to make any compromises on who they are and what they want.

It seems PINS spoke the truth and bad girls do, in fact, do it better.
