NEW SINGLE FROM YAEJI

Korean-American DJ and producer Yaeji has shared her new song ‘WAKING UP DOWN’ along with an announcement of an upcoming mixtape titled WHAT WE DREW’ 우리가 그려왔던 to be released on 2nd April.

Since arriving on the scene in 2016, Yaeji has been steadily building her reputation whilst carving out her own dance music niche; mellow and subdued house featuring softly sung vocals that switch between English and Korean. She’s also produced remixes for Charlie XCX and Robyn, sold out two headlining worldwide tours, and was included on the BBC’s Sound of 2018 list.

The lyrics to her newest self-produced track are straight to the point and celebrate the little day-to-day accomplishments of things like staying on top of to-do lists, making home-cooked meals, and having empathy for others.

The tongue-in-cheek anthem about small mundane victories is accompanied by a whimsical anime-inspired music video, based entirely on Yaeji’s own original character designs and illustrations. The video was produced by Studio Yotta and created in collaboration with Yaeji’s close friend Annie Zhao, who directed the video.

The title of her soon to be released mixtape WHAT WE DREW 우리가그려왔던 hints that the spirit of creative collaboration is central to Yaeji’s newest project. “[It’s] so much about friendship, family, gratitude and support - support that I've felt that I've given, and that we all share,” she said.

Yaeji began writing the music for WHAT WE DREW two years ago, with no specific narrative in mind. Instead each track is like a snapshot of her life, or a look into her diary. The mixtape is set to showcase various close friends and collaborators from Yaeji’s NYC community and beyond, including artists like Brooklyn-via-Oakland rapper Nappy Nina, London performance artist Victoria Sin, London producer Shy One, and Tokyo DJ and producer YonYon.
