Following the success of their 2019 Netflix docuseries, ‘I’m With The Band: Nasty Cherry’, the group has been met with stellar acclaim. The intimate six-part documentary gave an unfiltered view into the band’s making, giving soon to be fans a chance to fall in love with each of the girls’ lovable personalities - and of course, their incredible music too. One blow-up on social media later, and Nasty Cherry have since acquired a mass of adoring supporters. Last Thursday’s launch party being proof of that!

As expected, ‘The Movie’ is unapologetically fearless and rightly so. Birthed last summer in LA, the five tracks were written in collaboration with producer Yves Rothman, and featured co-writes with girl boss mentor Charli XCX.

Speaking of the title, Nasty Cherry said: “We wanted to make a ‘Stray Cat Rock: Delinquent Girl Boss’ / Russ Meyer style full-length feature film to come out with the EP. We got so hyped with Yves about it, and we genuinely started planning it and got two weeks into finding crew and writing it. Unfortunately, we are visionaries who turned it into a 5 million dollar action caper idea, and sadly no one else thought it was that good! We didn’t change the EP name because it’s got huge energy, and we really hope you’ll listen to it and imagine each song as a different act in a film.”

Infectious opening track ‘Six Six Six’ is the flawless setup for the thirteen minutes of transcendence encased within the EP. Fully charged and raring to go, it’s melodically irresistible. This is followed by 'What's The Deal' and the sensuous second single 'Her Body', where the fierce energy persists. Cooling off in track four, 'All In My Head', the group's softer side is unveiled - but that's not to say it lacks in any way. Described by Drummer Debbie as the wind-down from a big night out, the mellow textures of 'All In My Head' reaffirm the bands Hollywood blockbuster-inspired vision with each song emulating a different movie scene. Closing out with lead single ‘Lucky’, we come full circle; a “sweet and spiky little song,” it was written in reflection of the precious six week period the girls spent together during the pandemic.

It’s safe to say that Nasty Cherry are no strangers when it comes to unconventionality, and in all the right ways. ‘The Movie’ reflects that; it’s beautifully unafraid and 100% badass!Daring to just have fun and express their creativity both sonically and visually, they’re simply untouchable, empowering many with their iconic aesthetic and statement pieces. All we need now is that full length Nasty Cherry Album! That’s not too much to ask, right?

Hey hey, I’m Jess, and I'm an all-round creative weirdo from up north. I dabble with a few bits and bobs from songwriting and playing in bands, to music journalism and my day job in PR. I’m a sucker for discovering new music, and frankly I’d need a spreadsheet to organise my playlists at this point. Undoubtedly, I’m a huge advocate for promoting, and providing opportunities for minorities within the music industry - so being a part of the VG team is incredibly exciting! Some of my current obsessions include: Softcult, Art School Girlfriend, girlhouse, Sinead O Brien & Mumble Tide.
